Some addictions are obvious-such as alcohol or drugs. Others can be hidden more easily-pornography, food...even shopping. Recognizing and admitting an addiction is important. But how did we get here? How can we stop it and begin to experience freedom in Christ?
In this series, Mark Crow explains how understanding the addiction cycle is key to becoming free.
Need Deprivation. We all have legitimate needs in many areas; social, spiritual, fun, love, intimacy, sexual, physical, and financial. Understanding and managing our needs can prevent painful results.
Pain. It is an indicator that something is wrong. Are we hungry? Angry? Lonely? Tired? We may feel stress, isolation, or emotional discomfort - like hopelessness, anger, or confusion. There may be unresolved conflict in our lives - causing us to feel agitated or out of control. At this point, we have a choice to either deal with the pain in healthy ways or to continue through the addiction cycle.
Disassociation. In an effort to escape or medicate the pain, a person will disconnect from himself. During this crucial time, there are practical things an addict can do in order to stay grounded.
Behavior. At this stage of "acting out," it may be obvious to others. As the behavior is repeated over time, it becomes an addiction, actually creating a neurological pathway in the brain.
God doesn't want us to be ignorant of Satan's devices, but to watch ourselves lest we should stumble. Through this message - and the structure, accountability, and support of small groups - we pray you will find practical help to begin your journey to recover and freedom.
